Deep Vein Thrombosis

What is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis is an abnormal process of clotting in the deep veins of the body. Most commonly, the deep veins of the pelvis and legs are affected. The condition is serious, potentially fatal and very difficult to diagnose by external examination.

Some Causes

bullet Inactivity causes blood flow to slow in the deep veins of the lower legs
bullet Cramped seating
bullet Compression of thighs by the seat edge
bullet Dehydration due to excess alcohol and low cabin relative humidity

Some Risk Factors

bullet Passengers on flights of four hours or more duration 
bullet People over 40 years of age
bullet Individuals over six foot or under five feet tall 
bullet People with varicose veins
bullet People with heart disease
bullet Cancer sufferers
bullet Those with a history of blood clots
bullet Those who have recently undergone surgery
bullet Those who have recent leg injuries
bullet Women using the contraceptive pill or HRT
bullet Genetic defect Leiden V Factor
bullet Taking sedatives
